Louisiana's failing healthcare system is a major electoral issue. It has dominated three of the five proposed televised debates between Blanco and Jindal.
Jindal has vowed to do everything he can to keep the hospital system up and running. "In no way should we think about closing our charity hospitals. Instead, we need to come up with ways to give local communities more control," he has said.
Blanco, on her Web site, promises to work with small businesses to create affordable employee insurance programmes. She has also said she will call a summit of healthcare professionals to find ways to 'stretch our dollars'.
