At least nine cops and two civilians were killed when militants attacked a police post in Ind Gool village in Udhampur district of Jammu region on Saturday night.

Four cops went missing and were suspected to be abducted. A hunt was launched to trace them, police sources in Udhampur told rediff.com

The militants, the sources said, hurled grenades and opened fire from assault rifles.

Except for three cops, who succumbed to their injuries later, the rest died on the spot, the sources said.

Messages were flashed to Jammu and on Sunday morning senior police officers rushed to the spot.

"The death toll is likely to go up," said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

The sources said the militants also looted some arms and ammunition from the post.
