The BrahMos is the first ever supersonic cruise missile that uses liquid ram jet technology. The missile, with a range of 280km, weighs three tonnes and carries a conventional warhead of 200kg.

The BrahMos will not carry nuclear warheads because it is an anti-ship missile that can be launched from ships, submarines, aircraft and land.

The word BrahMos is a portmanteau. It stands for the river Brahmaputra and Moscow and has been jointly developed by India and Russia.
