Police have arrested two persons, who are believed to have made an attempt on Gujarat VHP general secretary Jaideep Patel's life on December 3.

Naroda police Inspector C L Kutty identified them as Mushtaq alias Kanio Ahmed Sheikh and Salim Yakub Patel, both residents of the sensitive Shah Alam area.

During interrogation, the two had confessed to their involvement in the assassination bid, he said adding their motive was to take revenge on 'Hindu leaders'.

"The duo confessed that it was Salim who fired the shot at Patel from a country-made revolver," Kutty said.

The two were earlier picked up during a raid by the state's prohibition department 10 days ago, he said.

The police had specific information about the identity of the people involved in the attack on Patel for some time, but were instructed to stall the arrests till after the assembly elections, he said.

Police are investigating how the conspiracy to assassinate the VHP leader was hatched and if any more people are involved.
