Maharashtra

The saffron alliance on Wednesday bagged four of the five seats of Maharashtra Legislative Council from local self-government constituency, making up for the loss of three other seats, which were won unopposed by the ruling Democratic Front alliance.

Both the saffron and DF alliance will have four members each in the state Legislative Council -- with the Congress winning three and NCP one, while the BJP and Shiv Sena will have two seats each.

The saffron alliance won both the seats from Mumbai as the Shiv Sena candidate, Arvind Sawant, retained the seat by bagging 89 votes while BJP's Madhu Chavan (with 83 votes) wrested the seat from Congress by defeating Kamruddin Merchant of Congress (52 polls).

The BJP retained its Nagpur seat with its nominee Sagar Meghe, son on NCP leader and Rajya Sabha member Datta Meghe, polling 221 first preference votes followed by Vijay Dangre, an independent (115) while Congress nominee and former MLA Avinash Pande got 71 votes.

Shiv Sena candidate Gopikishan Bajoria won the Akola-Washim seat by polling 404 votes against Lata Ingole of NCP, who got only 121 votes.

In Ahmednagar, Yashwantrao Gadakh Patil of Congress won the seat for the second time consecutively by securing 188 votes while his nearest opponent Mamta Pipada, the NCP rebel independent candidate got 118. Gadakh Patil belonged to NCP and Sena-BJP did not take any stand openly against him.

In other three seats, Mahadeo Mahadik from Kolhapur and Chandrakant Raghuvanshi from Dhule-Nandurbar (both Congress) and NCP state youth wing chief Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil from Solapur were elected unopposed on November 17.

Karnataka

Putting the ruling Congress in an embarrassing spot a rebel defeated Karnataka Minister of State for Civil Aviation T John. But the party swept the legislative council elections from local authorities constituencies, winning 20 seats out of 25.

While Minister for Energy Basavaraj Patil retained the Bidar seat successfully, John was not lucky as he was humbled by 49 votes in Kodagu by an Independent, Arun Machaiah, who contested as a rebel against him after Congress denied him the ticket.

The ruling party's victory has been robbed of its sheen by the defeat of John, who polled 462 votes against Machaiah's 511.

John had made a re-entry into the Cabinet two years ago after a controversial remark by him that the devastating Gujarat earthquake was a "divine retribution" for attacks on Christians in that state had cost him the job.

In the December 1 elections held to elect 25 members to the upper house from local authority constituencies, whose electorate comprised members from panchayats and urban civic bodies, Congress emerged victorious in 20 seats, a gain of five seats.

All India Progressive Janata Dal and Janata Dal (S) won two seats each and an independent triumphed in Kodagu.

But the principal opposition BJP suffered an ignominious defeat with all its 11 candidates being routed.

The efforts of opposition to make a dent on the Congress electoral base at the grassroot level have also failed to make any impact.

The Congress, which controls majority of the local bodies fielded candidates for 23 seats, AIPJD and JDS for 18 seats each and BJP 11.

Expressing joy over the party's impressive performance Chief Minister S M Krishna termed it as a mandate for the performance of his four-year-old government.

Uttar Pradesh

Fresh from victory in two assembly bypolls, the ruling Samajwadi Party-led coalition won 25 out of the 36 seats in the state legislative council.

The SP won 21 seats, its coalition partners Rashtriya Lok Dal and Rashtriya Kranti Party three and one respectively in the elections held for 36 seats of the council through local bodies on December 1.

The BJP won four seats of Varanasi, Ghazipur, Mirzapur and Rae Bareli, while former prime minister Chandra Shekhar's grandson Ravi Shankar Singh Pappu of the Samajwadi Janata Party romped home in Ballia.

Counting was still on in two seats while that in two constituencies would be taken up only tomorrow. SP candidate B S Yadav, who is also a minister in the Yadav government, was declared unopposed from Budaun constituency.

In Oratapgarh, sitting member Akshay Pratap Singh, a POTA detainee, was declared winner and in Aligarh SP rebel Sunil Singh won as independent.

The seats won by SP included Badaun, Bahraich, Lucknow, Lakhimpur, Sultanpur, Shahjahanpur, Saharanpur, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Banda, Hardoi, Barabanki, Allahabad, Agra, Azamgarh, Faizabad, Deoria, Jaunpur, Sitapur, Gonda and Etawah.

The RLD won Meerut, Moradabad and Bulanadshar and the RKP Bareilly seat.
