A hand grenade was hurled into the Indian consulate in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan, police said on Sunday.

The consulate was closed at the time of the attack on Saturday and no one was injured in the incident.

Witnesses told the police that some car-borne persons carried out the attack.

A top official from the Indian embassy in Kabul has been sent to Jalalabad to ascertain the details.

"There was no damage to the consulate. It is functioning normally and was open on Sunday," official sources in New Delhi said adding the grenade did not reach the main building of the consulate, which is at present headed by Consul General R Tandon.
