This Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Camera image, released on August 26, shows a dust devil and its shadow in the Phlegra region of Mars.
Dust devils are spinning, columnar vortices of air that move across a landscape.
They are common occurrences during summers on Mars. The view shown here is 3-km wide.
