August 25, 2003 'Our leaders should build a new India' I feel we have yet to get out of this syndrome about not giving due participation to the student community in the Indian democratic setup. The voice of students is throttled as was in our case, as the authorities have banned university elections. I feel India should grow out of its hackneyed ideas by 2010. It should take the example of developed nations and prove to be a true welfare state. We seem to be living in a police state where true freedom of expression lies only in books. Today, if students resort to violence, it is because their voice is not heard. I hope our leaders lay down their priorities and get down to real business in building a new India free of corruption, which is the root cause of most of our ills, particularly unemployment and poverty.
I feel a bulk of India's troubles would be removed if we could stamp out corruption from all levels of governance.
