August 16, 2003 'India's social support system is unique' The good thing in India is the social support system of family and friends. It is unique about India. I don't think you will find this in the West. The other thing that is amazing in India is the diversity. You can travel across just 60 kilometers, say from Bangalore to Hosur, and find such a difference, in terms of what the people are or what they eat or how they live. What I like about India is the fact that it is growing. It is on the upswing. I would like to see a fair and just system that rewards an individual solely on merit. Right now, many factors like caste or religion are given prominence over merit. We need to build a society based on meritocracy. The problems in India partly stem from the fact that many people who are paid to do a job don't even do the bare minimum that is expected from them, which is why we have a lot of inefficiency. At the other end, there is so much bureaucracy, red tapism and corruption. We also lack in successful implementation of policy. It is so difficult to get two people in our government to agree on something that makes sense. In my work I find that a number of patients -- except from the upper section of society -- are not aware about mental disorders. They tend to be very superstitious and have blind beliefs. There are a lot of biases floating around, social and otherwise. I would also like to see the healthcare sector opened up. We have many skilled doctors who are on par with the best in the world and can offer healthcare at lower costs compared to the West. I hope we can build India into an outsourcing destination even for healthcare services.
