'Schooling in India is a sheer waste of time'

My mother Gayatri is a maidservant in a government officer's home and my father Yogendra Prasad is a cook in the Central Reserve Police Force.

We live in the servant quarters in Delhi.

Last month I left school for good. My heart is not in studies. I like painting and want to become a great painter. With the help of NGOs, I will learn painting and earn my living, that's my dream.

I think schooling in India is a sheer waste of time. My 11th standard Hindi text books had such long chapters but teachers would finish teaching it in 30 minutes, and give us homework which would take two hours. Teachers were not interested in teaching us.

Education is a burden. I was studying in the English medium but I failed in the 11th. I will be going to Jaipur soon to learn miniature painting.

I have seen that people who study more become selfish. Have you seen doctors? Lawyers? Do they ever give us free treatment? Free advice? Schools don't teach us kindness.

In India, at every step we meet selfish people. Older people say India was not like this. Indians were very nice and honest. Now people cheat like hell. Previously we loved each other but these days Indians are not trustworthy. I want Indians to be less selfish.
