Bandh near total in Gujarat

The VHP-sponsored bandh to protest Tuesday's attack on the Swaminarayan temple in Gandhinagar evoked a near-total response in Gujarat even as police, paramilitary forces and army personnel maintained a tight vigil in sensitive areas of Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara.

Police officials said the situation was so far peaceful and under control all over the state.

Shopkeepers, who opened for business in different parts of the state on Thursday morning, pulled down their shutters after VHP activists requested them to do so.

Vehicular movement was thin in Ahmedabad as city transport buses were off the roads and only a few private vehicles were seen plying.

'We decided to keep buses off the roads in view of the heavy losses suffered in the post-Godhra riots', an official said.

Schools, colleges and private establishments were closed but attendance was picking up in state government offices as employees ventured out in two-wheelers.

In the sensitive localities of Dariapur, Mirzapur, Shahpur, Astodia and Kalupur in Ahmedabad, the main bazaars were closed and people preferred to stay indoors.

The BJP is not supporting the bandh and has appealed to the people to maintain peace.

In Vadodara, the bandh was total and peaceful, police said. Three columns of the army, one company of the CRPF and five companies of the State Reserve Police have been deployed in the city, a report said.

Most of the shops were closed but banks kept their shutters half-open while a holiday was declared in educational institutions, it said.

A Surat report said the response to the bandh was spontaneous. Army and Rapid Action Force personnel were positioned in sensitive areas and the situation was peaceful, it said.
