Panel to probe attack on Akshardham temple

The Gujarat government has constituted a panel to probe Tuesday's terrorist attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi told a press conference in Ahmedabad on Thursday that the attack was a conspiracy by an "enemy" country.

He said whether it was the attack on Parliament or the temple, the desire behind it was "only one". He did not elaborate.

The committee, headed by Director General of Police K Chakravarthy, will look into all aspects of the attack, including the logistical support provided to the two terrorists who carried it out.

"Whose mind was behind the attacks? Who were these terrorists? Everything will be investigated," Modi said.

He said the terrorists, who were killed by security forces after a nightlong operation, did not appear to be locals.

The two identical letters placed in the pockets of the slain terrorists were aimed at misguiding the investigations, Modi said.

He also complimented the security personnel for their "swift and courageous" action.

When asked if New Delhi had tipped off the state government about possible attacks on religious places in Gujarat, he replied in the negative.

"All inputs given to us by central agencies and others were only general type of information and did not state about any specific target," Modi said.

The chief minister announced a reward of Rs 100,000 for anyone providing information about the terrorists.

He also announced a compensation of Rs 1 million to the next of kin of each of the three security personnel killed in the operation.

He said the 23 security personnel injured in the attack would be given Rs 50,000 each.

For the civilians who were killed, the compensation would be as per government norms, Modi said.

He said a total of 28 civilians were killed and 53 injured in the attack.
