CBI directed to hand over documents demanded by Hindujas

A Delhi court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to hand over certain documents received from Sweden to the Hinduja brothers. This is to enable them to prepare their defence in the Bofors pay-off case.

Special Judge Prem Kumar, who had asked the CBI on Wednesday to spell out its stand on the documents yet to be translated from Swedish into English, ordered the probe agency to give copies of the same to the accused.

The direction follows an application by the Europe-based Hinduja brothers -- Srichand, Gopichand and Prakashchand -- seeking copies of some letters rogatory [letters of request] referred to by the court in its August 29 order rejecting their plea for quashing the CBI chargesheet.

The court also asked the CBI to make available to the accused certain papers received from Austria and assured that it would not let them feel handicapped for want of documents.

The CBI has already given copies of letters rogatory issued to Austria, Switzerland and Sweden to the accused. However, they will not get the the second part of papers received from Switzerland which do not relate to them.

Prem Kumar fixed Friday for the next date of hearing.
