Iraqi envoy trashes British allegations

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Iraq on Wednesday dismissed as "half-facts, half-lies, or total fabricated lies" the British prime minister's allegation that President Saddam Hussein's regime was secretly procuring weapons of mass destruction with help from some Indian companies.

Iraq's Ambassador to India Salah al-Mukhtar told rediff.com that the scientist councillor in the president's office had challenged Tony Blair to prove a single charge.

Al-Mukhtar said that if the international community wanted to verify the allegations, United Nations weapons inspectors should return immediately to Iraq. "No one can verify these allegations except UN inspectors because these allegations are not based on any fact," he said.

The ambassador said the British were just trying to create an excuse for the United States to wage war on Iraq.
