Tight security marks Congress-sponsored Gujarat bandh

The day-long Gujarat Bandh sponsored by the Congress party to protest the terrorist attack on the Akshardham temple at Gandhinagar yesterday, began this morning amid a strict security blanket around the state capital and other adjoining areas.

No untoward incident has been reported so far and vehicular traffic was normal though schools and shops remained closed, official sources said.

"So far Gujarat is peaceful except for the temple incident," a senior state government official said, adding that a red alert has been sounded all over the state.

The attack by two militants on a suicide mission had left about 30 devotees killed and scores injured.

In the minority-stronghold of Shahpur, shops and business establishments remained closed.

Unusual restraint in public movement was observed during the early hours, with people choosing to start the day cautiously, even as the authorities made adequate arrangements to prevent any escalation in the situation.

Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders from Gujarat who have called a nation-wide bandh tomorrow, said, "We have no programme for today."

"As per the directive from the central leaders, we will ensure the success of tomorrow's Bharat Bandh," a VHP spokesman said.
