Attack on temple an outrage against humanity: BJP

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday condemned the terrorist attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar

"This is an outrage against humanity and the terrorists by attacking the temple have demonstrated the extent to which their barbarism can misguide them," BJP chief spokesman Arun Jaitley said.

"The terrorists have deliberately selected a target which represents not only religiosity but also a great cultural heritage. The peaceful sect with a massive following has been in the forefront of philanthropist activity," he added.

Asked why the government did not anticipate the attack even after the intelligence agencies had told the Centre about the possibility of ISI-sponsored terrorists shifting their focus to Gujarat, Jaitley said there was no 'specific information'.

Asked whether the BJP associates itself with the Bharat bandh call given by the VHP on Wednesday, Jaitley said, "While the BJP has so far not given any such call it would urge upon anyone whosoever does so to ensure that no untoward incident takes place and the peace and harmony was not disturbed."

Maintaining the entire nation stands with the people of Gujarat in this hour of tragedy, the BJP spokesman said, "The terrorists were indeed frustrated with their utter failure to disrupt the first two rounds of successful elections in Kashmir."
