Terrorists had entered temple, ready for long haul

Josy Joseph in Gandhinagar

The two terrorists who mowed down 29 and injured over 50 did not fit the stereotypical image of terrorists.

One of them was a teenager. His companion was slightly older. They were a little over five feet and could not have weighed more than 60 kg.

But they were armed to the teeth and their machinations in the 24-acre complex indicated they had been at it for too long.

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said Pakistan was behind the attack, as it was frustrated that the first two phases of the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir had gone off well. They also hinted that the terrorists were trained across the border.

However, by Wednesday evening, Vishwa Hindu Parishad international general secretary Pravin Togadia demanded a detailed inquiry to assert their identity "whether they are foreigners."

No one heard the terrorists talk. While they were entering the compound, a volunteer named Atul stopped them. They showed him their automatic guns, and sprayed down some children playing on the grass.

In the next few hours they lobbed over 20 grenades and sprayed numerous rounds.

One thing is sure: The two entered the temple complex ready for a long haul. Their haversacks were full of dry fruits and chocolates. Those who had attacked Parliament on December 13, 2001, had the same modus operandi. Advani said the terrorists probably wanted to take hostages in the temple.

Many people saw them praying atop the parikrama's rooftop, but by the time they alerted the police they had vanished. Later, the two killers continued with their mission, shooting one of the state commandos who had climbed the parikrama.
