Govt has taken all necessary steps: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said the state government has taken all necessary steps to combat the 'dastardly' act of attack in the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar on Tuesday and appealed to the people to maintain peace.

"Having failed in Kashmir, it was a handiwork of the same elements as part of their deep conspiracy to disturb peace in Gujarat," he said.

The chief minister appealed to the people to have faith in the strength of the government and co-operate with it to handle the situation. "The strength of the government lay in the people's support," Modi said.

Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana also condemned the attack, terming it as 'inhuman and barbaric act of anti-nationals with vested interests to destroy the image of Gujarat'.

Rana however, expressed confidence that intelligence wings of the Gujarat police along with the central agencies would handle the situation swiftly.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, MP, has strongly condemned the attack. "The temple is not only a place of worship, it is place of faith and dedication for lakhs of people. The dastardly attack on this pious and sacred temple is an attack on the very foundation of internationally renowned Gujarati culture," Patel said in a statement in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari too condemned the attack and appealed to the people to guard against any design to disturb communal harmony.

He also urged people not to react to rumours.
