High alert in Delhi, AP, TN, West Bengal and Maharashtra following Gujarat temple attack

High alert was sounded in the capital on Tuesday evening, particularly at religious places and VIP areas in the wake of the terrorist attack on the Swaminarain temple in Gandhinagar.

"Entire Delhi police has been put on a high state of alert in the wake of the Gujarat incident," Special Commissioner (Security) Santosh Kumar Kain said.

He said police control vehicles, which have commandos, across the capital have been asked to keep strict vigil and additional deployment have been undertaken.

Security checking pickets have been set up and vigil ordered to be kept up on capital's borders, he said.

Religious places, VIP areas and public places like markets are being kept in special vigilance, he said, adding securitymen have been alerted to meet any exigencies.

Standby arrangements 'by keeping commandos ready' have been initiated, Kain said.

Delhi is under constant threat in recent times after the terrorist attack on Parliament House last year.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh police has also been put on high alert.

Strict vigil would be maintained at all places of worship and key installations, police sources said.

The state Director General of Police P Ramulu issued orders to all commissioners and district superintendents of police to be on 'high state of alert' and take all possible precautionary measures to maintain communal harmony and amity.

Round-the-clock vigil has been ordered at all vulnerable places, sources said, adding all police officers, who are on leave, were being recalled and asked to join duties.

The Maharashtra government also sounded a red alert across the state, Minister of State for Home Kripashankar Singh said.

Strict vigil will be maintained at all places of worship and key installations in the state, he said.

Tamil Nadu police are on 'red' alert

"The police will maintain strict vigil at all places of religious worship," state Director General of Police B P Nailwal said.

He said orders had been issued to commissioners and district superintendents of police to maintain round-the-clock vigil to ensure no untoward incident took place in the state.

The West Bengal government also put all districts on high alert and directed the police to keep strict watch.

Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee had earlier asked the state home secretary to take stock of the situation. Inspector General of Police (law and order) C Mukherjee said special instructions had been given to the police to keep vigil on 'pockets of mixed population'.

Security has also been tightened at the 12th century Sri Jagannath temple in Puri, Orissa.

A platoon of armed police, along with four officers, has been deployed in and outside the shrine, Superintendent of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi said.
