Rescue operation suspended temporarily, six policemen hurt

Vrunda Shah in Gandhinagar

The operation against the terrorists holed up in the famous Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar in Gujarat was suspended temporarily after six policemen were injured in a fresh exchange of fire.

Gujarat Home Secretary J Nityanand said: "We are now awaiting the arrival of the elite National Security Guards commandos from New Delhi."

So far, the local police and the State Reserve Police Force were involved in the rescue operation.

Home Minister Gordhan Zadaphia, Finance Minister Nitin Patel and Energy Minister Kaushik Patel are at the site.

At the time of filing this report, terrorists were holding around 25 people hostage.

The terrorists have not yet made any demands.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen are wearing khaki masks.

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani is likely to reach Gandhinagar tonight.
