Congress to fight for return of Indira memorial land

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

The Congress has decided to take to the streets its battle for the return of 25 acres of land under the Gomtinagar project at Lucknow, initially earmarked for and allotted to the Indira Gandhi Pratisthan for a memorial to the late prime minister. The party claims that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has cancelled the allotment to expand her Ambedkar Park project.

Addressing reporters in New Delhi on Monday, Motilal Vora, Congress general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh, said the party had decided to stage a massive protest in Lucknow on September 30 to demand that the Bahujan Samaj Party-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government in the state reconsider its decision and return the land to the original allottee.

Vora said the state government's decision appeared to be a move to "drive a wedge between the contribution of two great leaders". He maintained that the late Indira Gandhi and Dr B R Ambedkar had both contributed towards the growth of the nation, and the work of neither could be discounted.

Vora said their protest would be a peaceful one. But he said the party had not decided its next course of action in case the protest failed. He also said Congress president Sonia Gandhi would not be able to attend the protest for reasons of security as the programme was fixed at short notice.
