Schroeder's coalition wins German election

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's ruling coalition managed to retain power in Germany after a nailbiting finish in the general elections, officials said on Monday.

The ruling Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats were tied with 38.5 per cent of the votes each, but the SPD made the cut with the greater number of parliamentary seats.

The Greens, which fought the poll along with the Social Democrats, won 8.6 per cent of the vote.

Together the ruling coalition won 306 of the 603 seats in the Bundestag, or lower house of parliament.
