49-day-old Bihar transporters' strike called off

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The 49-day-old transporters' strike in Bihar ended on Wednesday after the state government agreed to reduce the hike in four categories of road tax by 50 per cent.

The agreement was reached after Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi convened a meeting, which was attended by ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and state Transport Minister Awadh Bihari Choudhary.

The transporters were on strike since July 31.

State government sources said a written agreement would be signed on Thursday.
