Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu spent most part of Tuesday consulting party leaders on the cabinet expansion he proposes to undertake on Wednesday.
He held a lengthy meeting with members of the Telugu Desam Party politburo, senior party leaders and cabinet colleagues on the issue. The question was whether to go in for a major overhaul of the cabinet or effect a minor expansion to fill up existing vacancies.
The majority wanted him to go in for a minor expansion to fill up the vacancies, and induct one or two ministers from districts, which are not represented in the cabinet.
The new ministers will be from Medak, Nizamabad and Karimnagar districts and they will fill the void caused by the death of higher education minister Karnam Ramachandra Rao and the resignations of labour minister Suddala Devaiah and panchayat raj minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, all from the Telangana region.
In the evening, the chief minister called another politburo meeting to finalise the names of ministers to be inducted. The present strength of the ministry is 36.
Some TDP legislators, who are on a study tour of South-East Asian countries, were calling up colleagues back home to enquire about their prospects.
The new ministers will be sworn in at a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan at 0945 hours IST by Governor Dr C Rangarajan.
