Rajnath Singh to flag off Gujarat
Gaurav Yatra on Sunday

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Describing it as a mission for bring about 'unity in Gujarat', the BJP on Friday said the proposed Gaurav Yatra in Gujarat would be flagged off in Phagvel on Sunday (September 8) by former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Rajnath Singh.

Party spokesman Sunil Shastri denied it would be tantamount to launching the party's election campaign and dismissed apprehensions that it would reignite communal tension in the state.

The caretaker Gujarat government headed by Chief Minister Narendra Modi had postponed the yatra on several occasions for various reasons, one of which was the announcement of a parallel programme by Congress chief Shankarsinh Vaghela.

Opposition parties have opposed the yatra fearing it would disrupt the peace, which has come after a long spate of communal violence, which began on February 27 when a bogie of the Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express was set on fire.
