UP government employees refuse J&K poll deputation

"About 80 per cent of the teachers of state polytechnic institutes have refused to go on poll duty to Jammu and Kashmir as the conditions there are not conducive," V P Saraswat, general secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Polytechnic Diploma Teachers Union, told reporters in Lucknow on Thursday.

The insurance cover of Rs 500,000 and honorarium of Rs 10,000 for the first phase of the poll and Rs 7,000 for the second phase are inadequate in view of the high security risk in the trouble-torn state, he said.

Saraswat alleged that the district administration had issued orders to lodge first information reports against the employees refusing to be deputed and to withhold their salaries.

Uttar Pradesh Electoral Officer Noor Mohammed termed the employees' worries "unfounded". He said the Election Commission and the J&K government were well aware of the risks involved and were committed to providing adequate security to those going on poll duty.
