Top French honour for ISRO chief

The French government has conferred the prestigious Officier de la Legion d'honneur [Officer of the Legion of Honour] on Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The distinction has been conferred upon Kasturirangan for his contribution to space research and management in India and in recognition of his contribution to Indo-French space cooperation, a release from the French embassy in New Delhi said.

French Ambassador to India Bernard de Montferrand will present the award to Kasturirangan on Friday.

Kasturirangan is a specialist in high-energy astronomy and one of the principal architects of India's space programme.

From developing India's first experimental earth observation satellites to overseeing the development of new generation spacecraft, particularly the Indian National Satellite and the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite, he has contributed to put India on the map of the leading countries that have major space programmes, the release said.
