Hurriyat drops plans to suspend People's Conference

The All-Parties Hurriyat Conference on Monday dropped plans to suspend the People's Conference after the latter gave an assurance that it was not going to be involved in any way in the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Hurriyat's decision, announced by its spokesman after a four-hour long meeting of its executive council, came in the wake of a written assurance from the People's Conference that it had nothing to do with the polls.

"The People's Conference, as the founding constituent of the Hurriyat, is bound by its charter and decisions. The party has no connection whatsoever with the forthcoming polls," the People's Conference said in a statement, which was discussed at the meeting.

The People's Conference submitted before the council that two of its members, Ghulam Mohiuddin Sofi and Ghulam Nabi Mirchal, who were contesting as independents, had already been expelled from the party.

The Hurriyat on Sunday had threatened to suspend the People's Conference, but deferred a final decision till Monday after the participation of the two candidates created a rift between the amalgam and the party.

The Hurriyat also banned the People's Conference office bearers from participating in any election rallies held by dissident candidates, the spokesman said.

The conglomerate told the People's Conference that the assassination of its founder Abdul Gani Lone should not be used for electoral gains, he said. "The PC leadership should take people of Kupwara district into confidence and urge them to stay away from the election," he said.
