Pakistan EC allots 60 seats reserved for women

The Pakistan Election Commission on Thursday allotted 60 parliamentary seats reserved for women, clearing the decks for convening of the National Assembly, 20 days after the general elections.

As per the allotment, based on the proportional representation system, the pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League (Qaide-e-Azam) got the highest number of 21 seats followed by Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, which bagged 16, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, 12, while others received 11 seats.

The commission said it would allot the 10 seats reserved for minorities on Friday.

With the allocation of the reserved seats for women, the strength of the PML-Q in the 342-member national assembly goes up to 98, but it still requires support of 74 others for simple majority of 172 seats.

Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's PPPP now has 79 seats while the MMA's strength has gone upto 57.

The commission is expected to announce the final strength of the parties along with the support of the independents tomorrow.
