JKLF splits for the second time

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front on Thursday split for the second time with three founder members electing Mohammad Iqbal Gandroo as their leader.

Besides Gandroo, Wajahat Qureshi and Khursheed Ahmad Dar made the announcement of parting ways with the Javed Ahmed Mir-led JKLF at a hurriedly-convened press conference in Srinagar.

They said they would ask the Hurriyat leadership to expel Mir from the executive council of the amalgam and appoint Gandroo as the JKLF's representative.

The JKLF split for the first time in 1993 when differences cropped up between the Kashmir-based leaders and the PoK-based leadership of the organisation headed by Amanullah Khan.

Gandroo, Qureshi and Dar said they would take their next step after the release from jail of chairman of the outfit Mohammed Yasin Malik.

Asked why they have revolted against Mir's leadership, they said the JKLF was suffering from a lack of leadership and Malik, whom they met in jail three months ago, has expressed unhappiness over the way the organisation was functioning in his absence.

To revive its credibility, the JKLF needed a strong and powerful leadership, they said.

On the offer of unconditional dialogue by chief minister-designate Mufti Mohammed Sayeed to resolve the Kashmir problem, they said, "Talks should be initiated with the boys who are carrying arms (militants) and not with political leaders."

They proposed settlement of the issue through dialogue.
