Govt has target of Rs 10 billion for defence exports: Fernandes

Defence Minister and Samata Party leader George Fernandes on Wednesday said that his ministry has set a target of Rs 10 billion (Rs 1000 crore) for defence exports and several countries, which were earlier blacklisted, have now been included in the export list.

"Till date, India has been a buyer of defence products. But now we aim to be sellers. Income from defence exports was between Rs 200 million to Rs one billion (Rs 20-100 crore) but from this year on our target is Rs 10 billion (Rs 1000 crore)," he said.

Fernandes told reporters in Rajkot that ammunition from 49 ordinance factories are ready for export and so is the indigenously built Light Combat Aircraft, rifles and propellants.

"We just have to market them," he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of Samata Party national convention, he said the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard are already using the Advanced Light Helicopter while a civilian version is under production.
