Jaya demands protection for Tamils in Karnataka

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday night asked the S M Krishna government to "ensure safety and security of Tamils" in Karnataka.

The demand came after some miscreants attacked the house of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader V Pugazhendi in Bangalore.

"...this act of vandalism and criminal assault is surely the handiwork of disgruntled sectarian anti-social elements, venting their venom on innocent Tamils in Karnataka as a reaction to the Supreme Court's observations against Karnataka," she said in a statement in Chennai.

The CM said this was in contrast to the "peaceful situation prevailing in Tamil Nadu, where Kannadigas live in total peace and security with no fear of attack on their person and property..."

A group of miscreants, at least one of them speaking in Tamil, ransacked the residence of Pugazhendi, injuring his wife and mother-in-law. Police said it was not known whether the incident was related to the Cauvery issue.

Jayalalithaa said the attack took place because he had appealed for the resumption of screening of Tamil programmes on television channels in Karnataka.

"Safeguarding the lives and properties of the Tamil population in the state, which is in a minority, is the duty of the Government of Karnataka... they should take all steps to provide such protection and to restore the confidence of the Tamils," she added.
