Senior IAS official receives
death threats in Bihar

Divisional Commissioner, Darbhanga, Amita Paul has received death threats from what she describes as a "mafia of corrupt employees in transport, education and health departments."

Paul lodged a police complaint after she received a letter threatening to kill her if she did not suspend her anti-corruption drive.

She has also written to the chief secretary and has been promised additional security.

"I have taken strong steps to streamline the administration and check corruption at all levels. All this had made me enemies and I suspect this letter is their handiwork," Paul said.

She said she had discovered several irregularities in the three departments and taken action against guilty officials.

Police suspect her personal assistant Ajit Kumar Poddar could have sent the letter.

Poddar has been absconding for a month after Paul took action against him for fraudulent withdrawal of money from the exchequer.
