'Tortured' wife seeks President's help

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Reena Choudhary, wife of Vijay Choudhary, a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, has written to President A P J Abdul Kalam claiming 'torture' by her husband.

In her letter, she has urged the President to order an inquiry into the alleged move of her husband to get a one-sided divorce.

Reena, a Christian, married Choudhary, a Hindu belonging to a socially underprivileged caste, in 1998. She claims she did not know that Choudhary was already married.

She threatened self-immolation along with her only child if denied justice.

Reena also approached National Human Rights Commission Chairman J S Varma last week for help.

Earlier, she had approached the Bihar Women's Commission alleging that the police was not acting on her complaint. But she was not sure of help from there as her husband had met the commission's president.

R K Dubey, a police official, confirmed that Reena had lodged a complaint alleging regular beatings and torture and sought protection for herself and her son.

The BWC has issued summons to Choudhary to appear before it on November 1.

Choudhary denies the allegations, claiming Reena is merely trying to sully his reputation and blackmail him.
