One arrested on charge of murdering constable in Ahmedabad

A 'history-sheeter' has been arrested in Ahmedabad for his alleged involvement in the murder of a police constable during the post-Godhra communal riots, police said on Monday.

Ismail Shaikh, accused of shooting down constable Bhanu Bharwad on March one, was arrested by the Vejalpur police late on Saturday night, and remanded to 11 days' police custody by a local court, police said.

Working on a tip-off that Shaikh would be returning to his home in Vejalpur on Saturday night, police arrested him, they said.

However, the police is yet to recover the weapon used in the crime.

Shaikh was wanted in connection with several offences, including rioting and chain-snatching, and had been absconding since the murder, they said.
