PM appears in public after being ill for four days

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday made his first public appearance in four days.

He spoke at a rally organised by the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party to commemorate the completion of three years of the National Democratic Alliance government.

He had cancelled all engagements after being down with a sore throat and viral fever.

He had also cut short his visit to Lucknow on Sunday and returned to the capital without addressing a scheduled press conference and meeting BJP leaders.

Referring to the cancellation he said, "I cancelled it because of the throat problem. Next day I see reports in the newspapers that Vajpayee ran away from Lucknow. Lucknow is my constituency. Why should I run from there... But newspapers want eye-catching headlines."

In his inimitable style, Vajpayee said the change in climate had given him a bad throat. "But I have faced vagaries of nature in the past three years, be it the super-cyclone in Orissa, earthquake in Gujarat, or the current spell of drought in several parts of the country."
