Between January and September this year, nearly 100 HIV positive cases have been detected at the Darbhanga Medical College Hospital in Bihar.
With this the number of cases in the state has gone up to nearly 1,700.
The cases were detected at the Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre set up at the hospital by the Bihar State Aids Control Society.
BSACS project director C K Anil said a majority of the victims were migrant labourers. In all, 677 people underwent tests at the VCTC during the period.
Regarding full-blown AIDS cases, the official figure for the state remains at 133.
Anil said 488 people have also tested positive at the Rajendra Memorial Research Institute, Agamkuan, Patna, since April 2001. In all, 2,424 people underwent voluntary tests at the RMRI.
The AIDS awareness drive launched by the government with the help of non-governmental organisations is yet to reach remote areas.
An AIDS patient from Narkatiaganj in East Champaran district shot dead his three children and wife before committing suicide due to the social stigma attached to the disease.
Villagers of Sahilarampur under the Hathouri police station of Muzaffarpur district have boycotted a family whose three members died of AIDS in the last 18 months.
