Gujarat prohibition minister resigns

Maniti Parmar in Gandhinagar

Gujarat Prohibition Minister Fakirsinh Vaghela resigned on Tuesday afternoon in protest against the Narendra Modi government's failure to take action against an officer of the crime branch of the state police who had a scuffle with his sons.

The scuffle between Deputy Commissioner of Police D G Vanjara and Vaghela's sons took place at a Navratri function last week.

Each party registered a case at the Gandhinagar police station accusing the other of provoking the violence. But the state government did not take any action in the matter.

Vaghela becomes the second minister to quit the Gujarat government after the state assembly was dissolved in July. Minister of State for Revenue Haren Pandya had resigned on August 6.
