Opposition-ruled states asked not to introduce latest NCERT books

Major opposition parties on Wednesday demanded withdrawal of the latest NCERT textbooks and asked the states ruled by them not to introduce the books in their school curricula.

"The so-called National Curriculum Framework imposed by the Centre should be rejected. We have decided that none of the state governments, where secular parties are in power, should implement these textbooks brought out by the NCERT," Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan said after an hourlong meeting of the parties.

The parties represented at the meeting were the Congress, CPI, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Nationalist Congress Party, Samajwadi Party, Lok Janshakti, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Janata Dal (Secular), Forward Bloc and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist).

"We would also urge the state governments ruled by NDA [National Democratic Alliance] allies like the TDP [Telugu Desam Party] and BJD [Biju Janata Dal] not to introduce the new textbooks, as they had joined the secular forces earlier in walking out of the State Education Ministers Conference on the issue of saffronisation," Bardhan said.

Congress leader Manmohan Singh said, "We have already instructed state governments ruled by our party not to introduce these textbooks. Most of them have also appointed committees to review them."
