Qazi Mohammad Afzal of the People's Democratic Party dealt a body blow to the National Conference when he defeated its president, Omar Abdullah, by a margin of 3,690 votes in Ganderbal.

That was only the beginning. As the day wore on, the NC was routed in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election.
