Alert after caller claims PM
to be 'assassinated', one held

A telephone call claiming that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would be 'assassinated' very shortly led to a security alert in the capital on Friday before the alleged caller was nabbed.

The call, made to a Supreme Court judge at his residence at around 1000 IST, warned of an attack on the prime minister, police sources told PTI.

Police swung into action as soon as they were alerted by the judge and traced the call to Sangam Vihar in south Delhi, the sources said.

One person, Munnu Singh, was detained on suspicion, they said.

Munnu, who appeared to be 'mentally unfit' and 'having a superstitious bent of mind', was being questioned by a joint team of police and intelligence agencies, they said.

Police are trying to ascertain if Munnu had ever served in the Prime Minister's Office in the past, the sources said.
