2 dentistry students attempt suicide in Patna

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Frustrated in their attempts to draw the attention of the state government to their problems, two students of dentistry in Bihar's capital Patna tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sedative drugs.

Saurabh and Gautam, students of the Lalit Narayan Mithila Minority Dental College in Darbhanga, were admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Superintendent of Police O N Bhaskar said the students are out of danger.

Several students from the college have been camping in Patna since last week to draw the government's attention over the inordinate delay in holding examinations and awarding of degrees for over a decade.

The students had earlier resorted to polishing shoes and washing cars in front of the Patna high court in protest.

Rohit Singh, another student, said Saurabh and Gautam decided to end their lives after realising that their protests were falling on deaf ears and warned that more students could resort to such extreme steps.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Shatrughan Sinha faced the wrath of the protesting students of private dental colleges in the state.

The agitating students tried to stop Sinha's car when he was leaving the Patna Doordarshan centre after attending a 'tele-bridge' conference on a health programme 'Kalyani'.

The students had a minor scuffle with Sinha's security personnel when they tried to gherao the film star-turned-politician and submit a memorandum. Security personnel had to chase the students away to and clear a path for the minister.

The angry students then locked the main gate of the Doordarshan centre for nearly two hours.

The agitating students are from the B R Ambedkar Dental College and four other dental colleges in Darbhanga, recognised by the Dental Council of India.
