Communal violence hits Gujarat town

Two groups clashed and indulged in arson prompting police to open fire, which left two persons injured, on Sunday in Dabhoi town of Gujarat's Vadodara district, police said.

The trouble broke out after minority community members were asked to withhold their programme of constructing a wall around the Lalshah Pir Dargah, which was damaged during the post-Godhra riots on March 15, Deputy Superintendent of Police Piyush Patel told the Press Trust of India over phone.

He said the gathering had agreed not to undertake any construction work in view of the navratri festival beginning on Monday.

"However, about 20 of them started the work, which the police had to stop," he said.

Angry over the suspension of the work, a crowd of around 150 people gathered near Ashiyana Building area and started damaging the shops.

A sweet shop and an outlet for audiocassettes were damaged, he said.

The police was forced to open five rounds of fire and lob teargas shells, he said.
