Bihar government to include JP in
school syllabi

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Bihar government plans to introduce in schoolbooks a chapter on the "life and thoughts" of Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan, the state Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Ram Chandra Purve, told rediff.com on Friday.

The government is consulting historians and experts in this regard, he said.

Purve said it is important to tell the new generation of the "sacrifice made by great freedom fighters like JP".

The state government has already decided to hold yearlong celebrations to mark the birth centenary of JP on October 11.

Purve said that all schools in the state would remain open on October 11.

He said the government has chalked out programmes to be conducted during the yearlong celebrations, especially in primary and secondary schools.

In 1977, the Janata Party, led by JP, came to power. It was the first time since independence that the Congress was dislodged at the Centre.

Barring the Left parties, JP brought together almost all major opposition parties, igniting mass movements in large parts of the country, especially in Bihar.

He died on October 8, 1979.
