Bihar bandh begins amid tight security

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Bihar bandh to protest the closure of the Hindustan Fertilisers Corporation factory in Begusarai by the Centre began on Tuesday amid tight security.

The bandh call was given by the Left Coordination Committee comprising the Communist Party of India, the CPI-Marxist, the Forward Bloc, the Revolutionary Socialist Party and the Socialist Unity Centre of India. The call has been supported by the Samata Party and the Janata Dal (United), allies of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.

The bandh evoked mixed response in Patna and other parts of the state. In some places commercial, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed.

But vehicles were plying as usual, with banks and other government offices remaining open.

The state administration has tightened security. Additional forces have been deployed to tackle any possible untoward incidents, state Home Secretary U N Panjiyar said.
