Muslim area in Patna tense after cleric's murder

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Tension prevailed in a Muslim dominated area in Patna in Bihar following the killing of a 70-year-old cleric, Maulana Abdul Gani Zafri, by three miscreants on Monday night.

As soon as the news of the killing spread, people thronged the incident site and business establishments closed their shops.

Patna Superintendent of Police O N Bhaskar told rediff.com that the situation is under control. "We have deployed armed forces to thwart any untoward incident. There is no question of taking any chance."

Zafri, brother of a prominent leader of a Muslim organisation, had his throat slit with a sharp weapon.

The police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. They said three miscreants entered Zafri's house and held his wife captive at gunpoint and locked her in a room. They then proceeded to kill him and fled from the spot.
