CPI-ML felicitates veteran leaders at party congress

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Communist Party of India-Marxist/Leninist felicitated 18 veteran communist leaders of Bihar on Monday at the opening session of the seventh party congress in Patna.

Among these were Jagannath Sarkar, 80, and Dr P Gupta, of the Communist Party of India, Tarakant Prakash of the Revolutionary Socialist Party and 'unsung heroes' of the Maoist movement in the state.

CPI-ML politburo member Swadesh Bhattacharya honoured their 'contribution to the revolutionary peasant movement in Bihar in the last three decades'.

CPI-ML general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya inaugurated the six-day session, at the Bharatiya Nritya Mandir.

This is first time that the CPI-ML, which came into existence about a decade ago, is holding its party congress in Bihar. Nearly 800 delegates and observers from all over India and 20 communist delegations from a dozen countries will take part in the congress.

The CPI-ML (Liberation), which is one of the many factions of the CPI-ML founded in 1969, has five legislators in the 243-member Bihar assembly.

It has emerged as the biggest leftist force in Bihar, leaving behind traditional parties like the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist.

Bhattacharya said that all the left parties and forces should come together with a common minimum programme to form a left confederation to give a clear cut and powerful alternative in Indian politics.
