Lok Sabha speaker admits adjournment motion on Gujarat

An opposition-sponsored adjournment motion on the Gujarat situation was on Monday admitted in Lok Sabha.

Admitting the motion on the opening day of the winter session of Parliament, Speaker Manohar Joshi said the motion would be taken up for discussion immediately after the Question Hour.

Communist Party of India-Marxist member Roopchand Pal gave the notice for the motion.

Joshi said three other notices of adjournment motion had also been received, including one from the leader of opposition Sonia Gandhi on the prevailing drought in several parts of the country.

Samajwadi Party members Ramji Lal Suman and Akhilesh Singh gave another notice on the political situation in Uttar Pradesh, while the fourth notice was related to law and order situation in Gujarat.

Joshi said the Business Advisory Committee will decide the dates for discussion on the three other notices of adjournment motion.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said the government had no objection to discuss all these issues under any rule at any time.

Congress chief whip Priyaranjan Dasmunsi drew the attention of the House to appalling drought situation in the country and said Gandhi's notice should be given top priority for a discussion, although there were other pressing political and economic issues.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on as a mark of respect to a sitting BJP member Narendra Mohan who died on September 20.

The House also paid tributes to two former members, Rajendra Pratap Sinha alias Balajee and B N Banerjee, who died during the inter-session period. Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat also strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Akshardham temple in Gujarat and holding of hostages inside a Moscow theatre.

He condoled the death of a large number of people in the Rajdhani Express accident near Gaya in Bihar.

Earlier, Shekhawat was given a hearty welcome by members as it was his first day as Chairman of the House after he took over as Vice-President.

Shekhawat introduced the new Secretary General Yogendra Narain to the House. He also administered oath to a new member from Uttar Pradesh, Lalit Suri, a well-known industrialist.
