Nagappa abduction: Karnataka
seeks appointment with Jaya

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

With the Union government suggesting a joint effort by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to secure the release of former minister H Nagpagga from forest brigand Veerappan's captivity, Karnataka on Thursday made the first move and sought an appointment with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for a discussion on the issue.

On Wednesday, Karnataka Chief Secretary A Ravindra contacted his counterpart in Tamil Nadu over the phone and initiated informal discussions on the matter.

According to sources, Chief Minister S M Krishna has instructed his Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge to visit Chennai to meet Jayalalithaa as soon as an appointment is fixed. Education Minister Professor B K Chanderashekar is likely to accompany Kharge to Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu government on its part has shown willingness to co-operate if its help was sought.

Jayalalithaa told a press conference in Chennai on Thursday that Karnataka was not sharing any information with the state on its efforts to get Nagappa freed and had so far not sought any help.

Meanwhile, pressure is building up on the Karnataka government to end the hostage crisis. While Lingayat seers have called a meeting in Bangalore on November 20 to demand swift government action to secure Nagappa's release, all opposition parties have formed a joint action committee to put pressure on the government.
