Nation pays homage to Pandit Nehru

India paid rich tributes to the architect of modern India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 113th birth anniversary on Thursday.

President A P J Abdul Kalam, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and several senior leaders offered flowers at his memorial Shantivan on the banks of the River Yamuna.

Deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Shivraj Patil, Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra, and Congress secretary Major Ved Prakash were among those who visited the memorial of the late prime minister and paid homage.

A large gathering of school children sang patriotic songs and released hundreds of multi-coloured balloons on the occasion in the memory of Nehru, who was fondly called 'Chacha' for his love for children.

Hundreds of people thronged Shantivan as a mark of respect for the leader.
